With this downturn in the economy, we as designers are lucky because we can do something about it.  We’ve got it easy.

Faced with a slowdown in business, most look to cut costs, maybe cut staff, or deal with making less money.  Marketing is how you get more business, but you need a budget to have a digital marketing campaign.  When you are actually in marketing, you only need a small budget.  We can develop a concept, perfect the design and hit our target market by only paying for printing, postage, or email.

If companies are turning to marketing to strengthen their position, they come to graphic designers, so that’s good for us too.  While business is booming, many companies don’t have the time or need (they think) for a marketing strategy.  We’re in the business of making businesses stand out from one another, so bad news could be a boon for us.

Also, we can choose whom we target.  A car salesman can only sell cars, trucks, whatever…they can’t suddenly sell groceries.  Graphic designers can go from selling cars to selling groceries.  As one sector feels the pain of the economy, we can offer our services to another sector that is doing well.  I’ll know things are bad when I’m designing logos for repo men, but it hasn’t gotten to that point yet, thankfully we are working.

So if you are a designer, cheer up and look for your opportunity.  You have no excuse to not send out your marketing.  You should always be looking for new client and you should always be marketing.  Feel lucky.
